Zip lining, Sky Dinners, Yacht Parties, Horseback Riding & More Dominican Republic Done Right

By J | Caribbean & International Travel | February | Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Getting to Punta Cana: What You Need to Know

Punta Cana has its own international airport (PUJ) and is one of the most well-connected Caribbean destinations for direct flights from the US. We flew in and, fair warning immigration at Punta Cana Airport can be a slow, overwhelming process. It was the longest immigration line I've ever stood in. Come prepared with patience, have your tourism card filled out (you'll need one upon arrival), and don't expect to rush through.

Once you're through, getting to your accommodation depends on where you're staying. We used Uber throughout our trip and it worked well for getting around the local areas and Bavaro strip. However, if you're staying at an all-inclusive resort, they'll usually have shuttle services arranged.

PRO TIP: If you're arriving in the Dominican Republic and want a stress-free, fully arranged transfer and private tour experience in the Caribbean, Tours & Taxi Jamaica (link below) offers premium chauffeur services and customized excursions. While we specialize in Jamaica, our team knows Caribbean travel inside and out — and we know exactly what makes a great trip flow. Where We Stayed: The Airbnb Experience

We went the Airbnb route rather than an all-inclusive resort, which gave us way more freedom and a more authentic, local experience. Our place was a townhome not the fanciest setup, but it had everything we needed: a full kitchen, living area, washer/dryer, outdoor patio, and most importantly a hot tub.

Yes. A hot tub. Outside. Under the palm trees. With rose petals, heart balloons, pink swimsuits, and a bottle. That's the Galentine's setup I built for my girls while they napped. I decorated the entire outdoor space, turned on the tub, blew up letter balloons that spelled out GALLENTINES, scattered rose petals, set up card games, and stocked the fridge. Because that's what you do when you love your friends.

AIRBNB TIP: Look for townhomes or villas with outdoor hot tubs in the Bavaro or Los Corales neighborhoods. Staying off-resort gives you access to local restaurants, more authentic experiences, and usually more space for the price. Book early — good options go fast during holiday weekends.

Day 1: Arrival Night & Setting the Tone

Dinner at Fujia Food Park

We landed, got through the world's slowest immigration line, found our way to the Airbnb, and by the time we settled in it was already after 7 PM. We were hungry, tired, and ready to start the trip right.

We headed to Fujia Food Park an outdoor food court concept where multiple restaurants operate under one roof. Think of it like a night market, but Dominican style. When we walked in, we were immediately handed what felt like 15 menus. The variety was overwhelming in the best way.

I ended up with pasta and garlic bread. Honestly? Sometimes comfort food is the move after a travel day. We ordered drinks, sat outside, watched the street life, and started to feel the energy of the Dominican Republic settle in around us.

Night Out with the Locals

Here's the thing about the DR your driver becomes your connect. Our Uber driver was absolutely the coolest, most helpful person. After dinner, he took us to a local after-hours club that we would have never found on our own. No tourist trap, no resort DJ playing the same five songs. This was locals only, real music, real energy.

We got chicken empanadas on the way home at 3am and I remember thinking: this is exactly the kind of trip this was supposed to be.

Day 2: Zip Lining, Caves, Blue Holes & Monkeys

We woke up, grabbed KFC (yes, KFC and yes, it hits different in another country), and headed to what I'll call the adventure park day. We had reservations at Scape Park / an excursion park in the Cap Cana area. Full day. Worth it? Mostly. Let me break it down.

The Zip Line Experience

This was Avery's first time zip lining, and it did not disappoint. We got suited up, hiked up to the platform, and launched. The views from up top were stunning lush jungle canopy, mountain terrain, that perfect Caribbean sky. We did the Superman position (stomach down, arms out full superhero energy). For Avery, the fear was real going up. Coming down? Pure joy.

Sades and I had zip lined before in Costa Rica, so we knew what to expect. I'd rate the experience a solid 7.5/10 thrilling, beautiful, and worth doing at least once. But it wasn't the cheapest line in the park.

The Caves & Blue Holes

This was the most unexpectedly magical part of the day. We descended into a cave system that opened up into an underground cenote a naturally formed pool of brilliant turquoise water surrounded by ancient rock formations. It didn't even look real. It looked like someone designed it for a movie set.

The water was crisp and refreshing, not cold. We swam, took pictures, and just floated there for a while soaking in the fact that we were literally inside a cave, swimming in a natural pool of glowing blue water in the Dominican Republic. On Valentine's Day. With our girls. Living.

CENOTE TIP: Bring water shoes if possible the cave paths can be slippery. Also, waterproof your phone or bring a waterproof case. You'll want every angle of this.

Monkeys & Safari Tour

The park also had a safari tour component where we got up close with the wildlife butterflies, tropical birds, and the monkeys. The monkeys were a whole experience. They climbed on us, sat on our heads, grabbed our hands. It was chaotic and adorable all at once.

Honest Review of the Park

Full transparency: I'd give the park overall a 6 out of 10. For $130, food was not included. ATVs were not included they wanted an extra $80 when you can find ATV rentals on the beach for $50. We skipped the ATVs for that reason alone. The zip line and cave experiences were genuinely incredible, but the price-to-value ratio on the full package wasn't great. If you go, pick your experiences selectively rather than buying the all-in bundle.

Day 3: Valentine's Day Dinner in the Sky & Horseback Riding on the Beach

This was the day. Valentine's Day. The day I planned specifically to be filled with experiences that matched the energy of the holiday romantic, elevated, unforgettable. We did not disappoint ourselves.

Dinner in the Sky 10/10 Experience

I don't care what you've tried before. Dinner in the Sky in Punta Cana is unlike anything I've experienced. The concept is exactly what it sounds like: a table full of guests is strapped in, lifted 150+ feet into the air by a crane, and you have your meal up there. Views of the ocean, the resort landscape, the Caribbean sky. It is absolutely cinematic.

We had a four-course meal: starting with fresh fruit, then avocado toast, followed by a vegetarian main (mine was actually the best at the table everyone was trying to eat off my plate), and dessert. Now, I'll be honest: the food quality is not what you're paying for. The experience is what you're paying for, and the experience is a full 10 out of 10.

We went up on Valentine's Day morning, and the weather was perfect sunny, warm, with just enough breeze. They played music, we swung our seats over the edge, they sang happy birthday to someone at the table, and we were all just completely present in the moment. Laughing, taking photos, shouting over the wind. It was exactly what Valentine's Day should feel like.

BOOKING TIP: Dinner in the Sky fills up fast, especially around holidays. Book at least 1-2 weeks in advance. Wear something you love but that won't fly away in the wind. Secure accessories. And YES your nails should match your dress. It's a whole moment.

Horseback Riding at Sunset on the Beach

After the sky dinner, we went to Zoho Beach Club for lunch on the water a local, chill spot that the internet hasn't really discovered yet. Lobster rice, fresh shrimp, beachside tables. Exactly what we needed to refuel.

Then: horseback riding. On the beach. At sunset. In the Dominican Republic. On Valentine's Day.

I'm going to need a moment.

We got our horses, put on cowboy hats (I had my Dominican Republic shirt on, obviously), and rode along the shoreline as the sun started to dip. My horse was beautiful and well-behaved I bonded with that animal in about 30 seconds. There was nobody else on the beach. Just us, the horses, the ocean, and the sky turning gold.

Now Avery's horse had other plans. Her horse kept bolting and running off down the beach, which caused a chain reaction of ALL the horses starting to run. There was a full chase sequence. It was terrifying in the moment and absolutely hilarious in retrospect. The guides handled it, nobody got hurt, and we all ended up riding at night with glow from the moon on the water. Which, honestly? That ended up being one of the most beautiful parts of the whole trip.

"This is probably one of my favorite hobbies, riding horses. They're just so calm. And I always get a good horse. The view from the beach... nobody else was even out there. That's what Valentine's is for."

Where to Eat in Punta Cana: Real Recs, Not Just the Resorts

One of the biggest mistakes people make in Punta Cana is eating exclusively at their resort. The local food scene is flavorful, affordable, and far more interesting. Here's what we actually ate:

Fujia Food Park

Great for a first-night casual dinner. Multiple restaurant options, outdoor seating, good drink selection. A bit overwhelming at first but worth exploring. Ideal for groups where everyone wants something different.

KFC Yes, Really

Don't sleep on KFC in another country. We hit it twice once in the morning before the adventure park, once after. Something about the spice blend is different. The Colonel is not the same Colonel down there. Go.

Zoho Beach Club

This gem isn't all over the travel blogs yet, and I want to keep it that way. Local spot, right on the beach, seafood-focused menu. I had the lobster shrimp rice and it was one of the best meals of the trip. Casual vibe, great atmosphere, no tourist markup.

Late-Night Chicken Empanadas

3 AM. Local vendor. Post-club. These empanadas were everything. No name, no address just follow your driver, trust the process.

FOOD TIP: Ask your Uber driver or local guide where they eat. Not where they take tourists where THEY eat. That's always where the best food is.

The Party Boat (The Day the SD Card Disappeared)

I have to be honest with you here because this is part of the story.

Our last full day involved a party boat called the Trinity and from what I can tell you from memory (because this is where the story gets frustrating), it was absolutely one of the best days of the entire trip. The yacht party had music, hookah on the water, pineapple drinks, dancing, swimming in the ocean, beautiful people, and pure unapologetic joy.

We were fully in our element. The kind of day that makes you feel like you're in a music video. Sun on your skin, ocean around you, your best friends dancing next to you. That day.

Now here's where I have to vent for a second. I woke up the morning after the boat party to find my SD card missing from my camera. Not my camerajust the SD card. Which, if you know cameras, you know a SD card does not fall out. You have to manually press and eject it. Nothing else was missing. Not my purse, not my money, not my camera itself.

To this day, I don't know what happened. What I do know is this: I had two SD cards. The first half of the trip all the adventures, the sky dinner, the horseback riding, the cave that was all on the first card and I have it. The boat day and the last night out were on the second card, which is gone. And that footage? I'm not over it.

The Galentine's Night: Because Your Girls Deserve a Whole Setup

Before we went out on Day 2, I had an hour to myself while the girls napped, and I used every single minute of it to transform our outdoor patio into a Galentine's setup.

I blew up letter balloons (found the hack use a straw and a knife to poke the opening, you're welcome), scattered rose petals around the hot tub, set up the card games on the patio table, poured out the treats I'd brought from home (Strawberry Crunch and Oreo Crunch cookies from my friend's home bakery), lit the whole vibe with the outdoor TV playing throwback music, and turned on the hot tub.

We all threw on matching pink swimsuits. We pregamed with drinks and card games before heading out. We played Sip & Spill and laughed until our stomachs hurt. It was the kind of night that doesn't need a club to feel like a celebration.

GALENTINE'S SETUP TIP: Amazon has GALLENTINES letter balloons for under $15. Get a metallic balloon pump or use the straw hack. Rose petals, a card game, matching swimsuits, and good music are all you need. It doesn't have to be expensive to feel special.
